A common decision from those with oily skin is to used harsh products that aim to dry out the skin and even at times steer clear of the oils and the moisturisers. Is this really the true cure? I’m sure you wouldn’t be here if it was, because the reality is, that is not what your skin is asking for.
Importance of cleansing
No matter your skin type, regular daily cleanse is important but with oily skin, there is more of an emphasis with a day and night cleanse.
Oil-based cleansers are recommended based on the idea that oil attracts oil. oil-based cleansers have been highly recommended lately as it tends to deep cleanse, which is what an oily face needs. Tempting as it may be to dry the skin out in an attempt to get rid of the oil, avoid alcohol-based products as they aim to strip out all the oil which can have the inverse reaction where it irritates the skin and produces more oil.
A gentle cleanser that contains salicylic acid will do just the job. Blemishes are a whole other issues as well and for this, you need, a charcoal-based cleanser, this will help draw out impurities.
Exfoliators are the bomb!
A good exfoliator will clear all makeup and excess sebum and will leave you with clear healthy skin . Exfoliating can be quite harsh for the skin so remember to exfoliate only once a week as doing more than this can actually make your skin worse.
Make moisturiser your best friend
Personally, moisturisers scare me, or used to, it’s the idea of ‘won’t this add more oil and grease to my skin? ‘Isn’t it too heavy for my skin and basically not letting the other products work? Honestly that’s all the effect of a bad moisturiser. For oily skin, you want a moisturiser that will leave a healthy dewy skin and maintain the hydration all day. Lack of moisturising may leave your skin dry and flaky which as we have found out might have the opposite effect that we are aiming for. A good oil free moisturiser is what you need.
Use a face mask once a week
Blemishes are part of the pains of oily skin. One of the best ways to fight against this is to routinely use face masks at least once a week. There are so many types of masks such as Clay-based formulas, witch hazel infused masks and many many more, they all have their benefits, but all masks will lend a helping hand.
General Skincare Tips
Most people pull out the sunscreen for sunny beach days, but it should be a daily layer in your routine in order to protect your skin from UV rays. You don’t always need a full purpose sunscreen, but you can use products that contain spf.
With open pores, it is important to always keep your face clean, for example always wash your face after a workout to prevent sweat from clogging your pores and causing spots.
For the makeup users out there, how often do you wash your makeup brushes? Do you even brush it? Makeup itself is clogging your pores, but some extra pore clogging dirt comes from non washed makeup brushes.
Regular use of your products for more than just a month and you will be seeing some results. i hope you find what works best for you, but don’t forget you are beautiful just the way you are.
